Sarasota has garnered national attention over the 2016 Child Hunger Summit. All Faiths Food Bank is proud to have hosted this leading-edge summit, with nationally recognized speakers and attendees traveling from throughout the state and country.
The startling costs of child hunger and its impact on health, education, workforce readiness and the community, were presented by nationally recognized authorities, who shared experience and insight with professionals from education, medicine, public health, public administration, human services and philanthropy. The 2016 Child Hunger Summit offered participants the chance to spend four hours learning about the lasting impacts of child hunger from four nationally recognized experts. The keynote speaker was Florida Surgeon General Dr. Celeste Philip, and she was joined by a remarkable panel for informative presentations and conversation.

Meet our distinguished speakers:
Celeste Philip, MD, MPH, Florida Surgeon General
Dr. Philip has served as Deputy Secretary for Health and Deputy State Health Officer for Children’s Medical Services. She is board certified in Family Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and serves on the Health Initiatives Committee Advisory Group to the Florida Board of Governors. Dr. Philip also held executive positions at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Heart Association’s six-state Greater Southeast Affiliate.

Sandra Hassink, MD, MS, FAAP, American Academy of Pediatrics, Immediate Past President
Dr. Hassink is recognized internationally as an expert in child obesity prevention. She is a pediatrician at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children where she founded and directs the weight management program of the Nemours Pediatric Obesity Initiative. She has held several leadership roles with The American Academy of Pediatrics.

Jessica Donze Black, RD, MPH, Pew Charitable Trusts, Kids Safe and Healthful Foods Project
Jessica Black has served as the National Director of the Healthy Schools Program for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative of the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation. In her work there, she led teams in 37 states make healthy and sustainable changes in their environments, policies, and practices.

Dayle Hayes, MS, RD, Author and Child Nutrition Expert
Dayle Hayes is an award-winning author, educator and speaker. She has served on the American Dietetic Association Board of Directors chairing the Public Initiative Team and Technology Task Force. She won an Outstanding Community Health Promotion Program Award from CDC and is a past president of the Montana Dietetic Association.

The Faces of Hunger: Causes, Consequences and Solutions
Business and local leaders, agency partners and social service representatives attended our Hunger Summit on September 30 because they want to be a part of the solution to hunger in our community. Moderator Tom Tryon, of the Sarasota Herald Tribune started the conversations with, “Sarasota isn’t paradise if you’re hungry.”
Guest speaker and expert in the field of hunger relief Robin Safley, JD, Director, Food Nutrition & Wellness, Florida Department of Agriculture, lead the discussion relating to the consequences and solutions, and the long-term impact that hunger has on our residents.
Lars Gilberts, Statewide ALICE Director of the United Way provided an in-depth look at the local Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed (ALICE) report and the determination of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that deemed Sarasota County as one of eight “hot spots” priority areas for intervention. Due to the service and seasonal economic environment in this area, more than 30% of Sarasota County residents are one crisis away from poverty, and often make desperate choices to make ends meet.
